Mojang has confirmed The Sift as Minecraft's fourth dimension, according to Nintendo Life, joining the Overworld, the Nether and the End for the first time in more than 14 years.

The reveal came during the Minecraft Live – September 2026 broadcast. Windows Central also covered the show, confirming the new dimension as the headline announcement of the event.

The Sift previously featured as a setting in Minecraft Dungeons II. Mojang has now confirmed the dimension will arrive in both Minecraft Bedrock and Java Edition next year.

Dungeons II Gets There First

Players will get an earlier look at The Sift when Minecraft Dungeons II launches on Switch 1 and Switch 2 on 29th September 2026, as reported by Nintendo Life.

That's just two days from now.

The spin-off arrives ahead of the main game's own Switch 2 debut, which is set for 27th October 2026. Minecraft is also getting a free upgrade path on the new console.

Ice Caves Also Revealed

Mojang used the same broadcast to preview an upcoming game drop centred on Ice Caves, a new cave biome. It features icicles, light-emitting ice crystals, calcite formations and a frozen zombie variant, according to Nintendo Life.

No release date for the Ice Caves drop was given during the show.

Fan Reaction

News of The Sift spread quickly on social media following the broadcast, with one widely shared post recapping the announcement drawing hundreds of likes and dozens of retweets within hours.

Reaction among Nintendo Life's own readers was mixed.

One commenter said the update could be the first since the Caves and Cliffs update to pull them back into vanilla survival Minecraft, while others said they were waiting to see how difficult The Sift would be to reach in-game.

The Sift becomes the first entirely new dimension since the End was added to Minecraft in 2011. Mojang has not detailed how players will access it, or what mobs and blocks it will contain, beyond its earlier appearance in Minecraft Dungeons II.

With Minecraft's Switch 2 launch now a month away and Dungeons II landing this week, Mojang has lined up a run of releases that give players their first taste of The Sift well before the full dimension reaches Bedrock and Java next year.
